Based on the tragedy of J.W. Goethe, K. Marlo, G. Sachs and the «German Folk Book»

The image of Dr. Faust – a warlock, soothsayer, astrologer and alchemist was repeatedly used in literature, had a real prototype. The life of Dr. Johann Georg Faust, who posed himself as a great scientist, open doors to many legends, which were first reflected in the Folk Book of Faust (1587) in the form of a frightening story about diabolical temptations. Here we see an agreement with the devil for 24 years, and the devil himself disguised as a dog, and a marriage with Elena, and a «terrible and horrific» death. At that time when belief in otherworld forces was still alive, the story had immense popularity. The plot was picked up by K. Marlo, who gave it the first theatrical treatment (“The Tragic History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faust”, premiered in 1594), and then there were many adaptations of the drama into pantomime and performances for the puppet theater in England and Germany … Goethe’s legend becomes something incomparably greater: his Faust is contradictory, but it is the struggle between good and evil in the hero’s soul that hardens him. Indeed, in misfortunes, in difficulties and temptations, the true essence of a person, the strength of his spirit is known …
